Food Typography - Proverbs 14:4

We had what we call a "Pinterest Party" at a friends house. The idea is to actually do one of those things you've pinned... which is harder than you might think. Anyway, I've been wanting to try food typography for quite a while now, so that's what I chose.

I spent an afternoon Christmas season before last on a type project specifically for my Facebook cover photo. I used the verse Proverbs 14:4, which says, "Where there are no oxen the stable is clean, but abundant crops come by the strength of the ox." My wife and I have really benefited from that verse, in particular it is a good reminder that seasons of productivity or shared with seasons of "messiness". Just like it requires getting down and dirty to plant a garden in the spring to reap a rich harvest in the fall. 

Some mentioned they would like a print of something like that (the cover photo they saw), so I decided I'd like to take a little more time in the future to make something that would show better in someone's house.

It's no surprise then, that I chose to do some food typography of this verse. It's also no surprise that, never having practiced it before, it is definitely not print for house-worthy! The results were a good experience, if nothing else. Our hostess graciously allowed me to use her vibrant, colorful spice collection! I used a dead pen and my fingers.

Any other food typographers out there? What is your process like? I intend to try again soon when I have another 2 hours to spare on food typography. This is the finished product:

Birthday Party in a Limo

I had a crazy time shooting a birthday party in a limo and hotel. It was a fun challenge to capture the personality of the group in a documentary style in such low lighting. Using little to no available natural light was really something, as well as relying on my on camera flash (580 EX II in the hot shoe, technically) was quite the exercise. It was also frightening and rewarding to pass the 5D mark III around the cab.

Filmonaut XVIII - Super Ricohflex on Ilford Delta 400

Last time I posted some film photos in the Filmonaut XVII album, I said that I wanted to obtain a medium format camera with more control than my Holga to shoot with those rolls of Ilford? 

Well, here are the results from my brand new (traded, actually, from the 1950s) Super Ricohflex. These were all shot on Ilford Delta HP5 400. The combination of this film stock with the Ricohflex presented such great tones and contrast! I really didn't know what kind of images to expect to come from the camera when I first started shooting with it, but I couldn't be more pleased!

I've been using a light meter app on my phone, which is another thing which has worked surprisingly well so far. Since the images below were developed, I've shot a good bit from a snowboarding trip on the slopes (we actually rigged a case for the camera out of scarfs and toboggan hats, but that's another story), met with another brilliant film photographer and learned many things (perhaps more on that to come?) and shot with a good number of other film stocks to broaden my horizons. I can't wait to share the rest with you and I hope you enjoy, despite the lint on my scans.
